Dudaim

(Genesis 30:14)

Rachel grows desperate,

requests mandrakes from her rival;

sometimes rendered as mushrooms,

in certain Biblical translations.

An aphrodisiac,

fertility wonder drug;

perhaps, with G-d’s help,

she will conceive.

Meanwhile,

Leah keeps bearing children;

finally, Rachel’s prayers are answered,

with her firstborn, Joseph.

As is written,

except the L-RD build the house,

they labour in vain that build it.

No credit to the mandrakes.
