Sagami

Sweat, discipline, and a weekly regimen,

fosters a strong will, and a determination

that prevails each and everyday, until

the end of the semester, after testing

~ we cross the span of the river ~

To feast on miso soup, sushi, and sashimi;

cups of green tea, and sake throughout dinner.

Conversation turns towards Japan, where

all devoted students would like to train.

  1. Your bridge line is perfect. I like how you express the time from before testing to after as crossing a span of the river, and then in the last stanza you mention actual travel.
    (And, span is often used to describe bridges, so an extra bit of wordplay for the bridge line.)

    1. Truth be told, an actual bridge. I went to Temple University in Philadelphia.
      The bridge is the Ben Franklin Bridge. The restaurant is Sagami Japanese Restaurant in Collingswood, NJ.
      The poem was inspired by the mentioning of specific bridges in the prompt.

  2. This is brilliantly executed! I too love the bridge line that connects from “a determination that prevails each and everyday,” to “all devoted students would like to train.” 🙂
